Universalist church building demolition watch

This time, Peoria, Illinois. Sure, the congregation sold it, but it seems noteworthy because this was once one of the largest Universalist churches in the country.

The 94-year-old Universalist Unitarian Church in Peoria, which was sold to Methodist Medical Center last October and could be demolished, has been put on a list of the top 10 most endangered historic places in Illinois, officials announced Wednesday.

  1. It has been a huge disappointment that Methodist hospital ..the current owner of the rubble that was the Church has demolished the building. In a town that has a lot of great architecture… this was one of the world class examples. I wish the church wouldn’t have sold to someone who vocally intended to demolish the building. I think it is disturbing to tear down a Church. Especially when the new owner doesn’t even say what is going to take its place. The Church members and Methodist should put a historic plaque for our children to read of our legacy-Here Lies the remains of the 94-year-old Universalist Unitarian Church in Peoria, we tore it down for another parking lot.
