I know New York Ave Presby. You must have been orbiting my apartment.

The hymn is the Trisagion, so I wonder if the tune is Eastern and if it might be S102 in the Episcopal hymnal. (I don't know that notation and I can't get the link to work.)

Scott, sorry you couldn't make it. I wound up in the overflow church (New York Ave Presbo), so I saw the main worship service projected on a screen.

Most of the speakers in the worship service were, umm, less than inspiring. Rev. Dr. Raphael Warnock, senior pastor at Ebenezer Baptist Church ("the spiritual home of MLK") was, however, excellent, in the best Baptist style. His pacing and timing were excellent, he made effective use of repetition, and he had a powerful message.

The overall worship service was excellent, with a good liturgical flow and excellent use of music. I would guess that the huge worship staff at the National Cathedral was behind liturgy and music (they got credit in the order of service). Especially effective was a short hymn repeated throughout the service -- I've included it in abc musical notation below (convert abc to sheet music or MIDI here) -- with harmony that started out minor or modal, and wound up with a major chord in the final measure. Very nice to sing repeatedly.

The congregational singing and music were in general excellent. That's sort of my stereotype of Mainline worship -- excellent music with radio-announcer preaching.

Excellent point. Some of us on the left need to ask ourselves - "What would the speeches of MLK have sounded like if he spoke like some of us do on the left do these days?"
