Though a voter for twenty years, I have just now been front-door canvassed for the first time. Two sunny twenty-something campaigners for Barack Obama, but not from the campaign. (More about that in the minute.) I told them I would vote for him and took their flyer. They clearly had the Democratic Party voter […]

One of my favorite D.C. churches is First Baptist. Really. One reason: I like how the senior minister “tell[s] people we are the ‘Jimmy Carter kind of Baptists’ and not the Jerry Falwell kind,” which strikes me as a very evocative way of identifying a church. I’d take evocation over description almost every time.

Goodness, I’m reading 201 news feeds now through Google Reader. Let me step back and point out some goodies I’ve read over the last few days.
A lengthy post at the Better Bibles Blog distinguishing internal Christian secrets and mysteries of the faith. (Which makes me want to ask what good reason [...]

Today is the first day we’ve had sticking snow in the District of Columbia — yesterday we had rumors of early flurries — so the city is a bit quieter.
But none the less busy here . . . for some reason UniversalistChurch.net is down. Will have to look into that.

The more I read about what younger Jews are doing to revitalize worship and community, the more I want something similar for Christians. I often see themes of lay-centered, multi-participant and tradition transcending worship in groups (which have adopted the older and more general name minyanim; somehow the usual translation “prayer quora” doesn’t cut it) […]

I know plovers doesn’t rhyme with lovers, but this hopeful story (with a cute photo) from today’s New York Times makes me even happier with Massachusetts than Virginia (the “is for lovers” state) that makes life very hard indeed for same-sex couples. No, I’ve not forgotten.
And given my choice of where I can live, work, […]

I can imagine when, mentioning that I’m planning a third Unitarian Universalist church — specifically a second Universalist Christian one — in the District of Columbia there’s some agita about whether there’s room in the environment. And where in D.C. it would be?

I’m gathering up demographic data for areas for my pre-pre-pre-alpha church plant.
The District of Columbia has changed so much in the last few years, but I’m still going to start with Census 2000 data because it gives me a base line for demographic changes. (I’ll report on more current info as I find it.)
A good […]

Sorry gang for not writing. Mom and Dad are in town — more about that later — for the twenty-fifth anniversary of the dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Because Dad was on duty most of the time, I entertained Mom on Friday and Hubby joined in over the weekend.
Friday, north [...]

The news today (link, link, link) among the car-free sort is Zipcar is buying out Flexcar. There’s some rumor that Flexcar has been troubled financially, but I read it as a loss of choice, value and quality for those in Washington, D.C. moving away from car ownership. Especially if you’re under 25, and without a […]
