Terms as the Uniting Church of Australia defines them

Monday, September 10th, 2007

From paragraph three of the Uniting Church of Australia constitution. A couple of interesting concepts, simply described. Not all would work with Unitarian Universalists, and the UUA shouldn’t come up with a glossary including terms like these — their polity is presbyerial — but I think a congregation reasonably should, to help clarify terms and […]

Mercersburg Society re-emerges

Friday, August 31st, 2007

Thanks to Jonathan Bonomo at Reformed Catholicism for noting the Mercersburg Society’s Web site, which has a new harbor — appropriately enough — with the Philip Schaff Library of the Lancaster Theological Seminary. (The library also hosts the Evangelical and Reformed Church — half of the present United Church of Christ — archives.)

In case you’re […]

Tammy Faye Messner, 1942-2007

Saturday, July 21st, 2007

The evangelist Tammy Faye died yesterday and her remains were buried today. Let her rest in peace.

I didn’t much care for the ministry she conducted with her first husband Jim Bakker. I didn’t and don’t understand her makeup fixation. I don’t pretend to know what role she might have had with Heritage USA, the Christian-themed […]

Conventions 2007: CRCNA opens to women’s leadership (again)

Sunday, June 17th, 2007

Dwight (A Religious Liberal Blog) notes the decision of the just-concluded Synod meeting of the Christian Reformed Church in North America

voting to remove the word “male” as a requirement for holding ecclesiastical office in the Christian Reformed Church. Synod also decided that women will be allowed as delegates to Synod 2008. [Official Synod wrap-up]

Top five articles for May

Monday, June 4th, 2007

Few surprises that these were the most read articles in May for Boy in the Bands.

“Where is Meadville Lombard going?” Like other–perhaps all–Unitarian Universalist ministers, I got an email from the Rev. Lee Barker, the president of Meadville Lombard Theological School . . . .
“Buying US-made clothing, [...]

Memo to Archbishop: see what you’ve done?

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

Rowan Williams, the archbishop of Canterbury, rolls out one disappointment after another. The New York Times reported (Laurie Goodstein, “Gay and Dissident Bishops Excluded from ‘08 Meeting”) today that neither Gene Robinson, the Episcopal bishop of New Hampshire, nor Martyn Minns, who was consecrated bishop by the Nigerian Anglican church for dissidents in the […]

I’m not sad Falwell’s gone

Wednesday, May 16th, 2007

I remember a maxim one of my religion professors — more ill than any of us late teen scholars knew — offered the class before the lecture started. In so many words: It’s a sin to wish someone dead, but you can enjoy some obituaries more than others. He died at the end of the […]

Has the Episcopal Church jumped the shark?

Friday, May 4th, 2007

Gutter newspaper and television has made some hay about Jim McGreevey — former New Jersey governor and “gay American” — being received into the Episcopal Church, being accepted to study at General Theological Seminary and pursuing holy orders. It’s been a busy week for him: good luck. I won’t wonder what happened if he’s not […]

An Anglican/Episcopalian briefing paper of note

Tuesday, April 10th, 2007

I’ve been reading essays from the Right Rev. Pierre Whalon since before he was consecrated to be the bishop of the Convocation of American Churches in Europe. He makes a lot of sense, avoiding obtuse jargon and by keeping to a middle course. His “A Bishop’s Estimate of the Situation,” published at Anglicans Online doesn’t […]

Sounds like something found at UUA GA

Monday, March 26th, 2007

At their General Assembly this year, the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) is asking churches to send a chalice (the kind you drink out of) to swap. I’m getting a terrible “white elephant” vibe, but you know there are some potters out there who are quite happy about the news.

Still, it’s a nice thought.
