Life at $4 a gallon

Monday, April 21st, 2008

Within a three day period, I have spoken with two persons in completely unrelated situation (and different locales) who have made statements starting “when gas hits $4 a gallon we’ll have to . . . .” with something not-nice following.

You, dear readers, know how much I like dense urban development and reliable, efficient public transportation […]

Theists and humanists in the same house

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

Stephen Lingwood (Reignite) summed up many of my own feelings about the putative optionality of God one sees in Unitarian Universalism. (His title — “Is humanism theologically tolerant?” — is a bit misleading as it puts the onus of the problem on one half of the theist/humanist divide and misstates the conflicts in terms of […]

Future of theological education?

Saturday, April 19th, 2008

Several years ago, visiting a colleague-friend, I visited the Universalist-founded Tufts University, musing that this was as close as I was ever to get to a formal Universalist education. Crane, the Universalist seminary at Tufts, and St. Lawrence, the Universalist seminary in upstate New York were both closed in the late 1960s because the powers-that-were […]

Bread afflicted? Praise for potato

Friday, April 18th, 2008

In addition to other life choices, I want to eat more locally. These days, a lot of people do. But I know that if I shop at a farmer’s market, I’m likely to be offered selection of expensive greens (that aren’t filling), breads and soups (where do the raw materials come from?) or meat (which […]

Writing about Universalism: could use your help

Thursday, April 17th, 2008

As you may well have noticed, I’ve written relatively little about Unitarian Universalism lately and almost nothing about Universalism. Of course others have written about Universalism and that makes me happy. If you’ll forgive me, I’ve been writing about Universalism online since 1995 and I could use some help.

What themes and topics would be helpful […]

Expelled? Ain’t buying the smell of persecution

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

A few weeks ago, ads started appearing in my Gmail about Expelled, a film with Ben Stein that had the smell of a right-wing pity party. Boo-hoo: someone disagrees with him. Give me strength.

No link to it, but a link to Expelled Exposed, a rebuttal site. I don’t have a horse in this race […]

Boy in the Bands upgrading; do you have requests?

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

As the title says, I’m upgrading the style and usability of this blog. All the improvements will be on another semi-secret blog and will be rolled out in stages.

I’m of the school that the blog should do what it needs to do with as little glitz as possible, yet anticipating features (like microformats) that make […]

Union-made men’s dress shirts

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

I’m losing weight — 34 pounds so far — and am beginning to swim in my old clothes. I had already planned to replace much of it because they are showing signs of wear, but only with clothes I know can be sourced without sweatshops. I’ve had to step back a bit from my US-made, […]

Krister Stendahl, 1921-2008

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

Died this day, Krister Stendahl, bishop in the Church of Sweden and professor emeritus of Harvard Divinity School.

I kind of thought he would live forever — and not in the way one speaks of Christian hope. He leaves a remarkable legacy. Let him rest in peace.

Link: Wikipedia biography including the Stendahl’s three rules of […]

I’m proud to pay taxes

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

A little light lunchtime blogging.

I love Donna Fargo, and especially this upbeat, optimistic, patriotic yet (in its own way) contrary number. Note that the version you see isn’t how it was originally recorded, but included in the spoken bridge:

And I will be proud to continue to pay taxes for the opportunity to live in the […]
