To make the most impact, I give to only a few charitable organizations, and one is the Friends of the World Food Program. The World Food Program has a good history of food relief, with an excellent record of efficiency and the capacity to make a real difference. The Friends is the US support affiliate.

Let me quite plain: the first thing I thought when I saw this is “What the h*** is he running for? Manchurian Candidate in Chief?” No, that’s neither nice nor fair, so I offer the thought with caveats.
But in 2008, I’d rather not re-fight the Vietnam War by proxy. And I’d rather not fight [...]

The author of debitage hammers the subtext of torture. Read it.

Ah, Flickr, the photo sharing service has been drawing some significant image collections and I just saw some stereograph from postbellum Boston, from the collection of the Boston Library. Might I recommend the slideshow? (Go fast; the stereographs are sorted by topic so you’re bound to get a whole bunch of very similar images.)
The churches [...]

I got a solicitation letter from the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) today. I’m normally sour about solicitation letters and the UUSC hasn’t been so hot in recent years, having a weird-ambiguous relationship with congregational Unitarian Universalism and a less-than-perfect efficiency rating by services like Charity Navigator. But the print piece and its new logo [...]

I’ve rehearsed before why I prefer and promote US made goods, but sometimes they’re hard to find in certain sectors. So I use a variety of resources to find leads. The irony is that one of my favorites is a Canadian source. (I’ll choose Canadian goods over other countries’ when that’s an option.)
There’s a fun [...]

Back in 2006, I first wrote about the UK-based Megabus entering the US market, and giving riders an option between the hard-worn Greyhound and the under-regulated (”is that antifreeze?”) “Chinatown” buses. (Link, to give you an idea of schedules and fares.) They’ve since moved to locations in California and Nevada, and have now announced a [...]

Co-op America has released its new sweatshop clothing alternatives guide. Just in time, too, as the old one was showing its age. (I notice First Unitarian, Portland, Ore. gets a mention in the caption on p. 7.)

I procured a domain that references one of my favorite biblical characters, or rather one of those characters whose presence (like Eutychus) only begs more questions.
Let me introduce (tentatively) theothermary.org — there’s no content there; indeed, I’ve not yet even pointed the nameservers to my host, but I’m pondering its use.
The reference, of course, is [...]

I almost didn’t go to the midday service at nearby Luther Place Memorial Church (ELCA) but I’m glad I did. My liturgical experiences at this church have been hit-and-miss in years past, but the church conducted worship well and I wanted to comment on what made it successful.
The music was very good. In particular, [...]
