Tiny Firefox diet hack

Monday, February 11th, 2008

You could use the Calorie King toolbar to look up the nutritional information of food — I record everything I eat — but I think that takes up too much monitor space.

Instead, I added Calorie King as a search engine in the pull-down search engine bar at the upper right hand side of my browser. […]

Buying American: at the arts supply store, grocery

Sunday, February 10th, 2008

Out again today, walking, but the weather isn’t as nice as yesterday. Much colder with gusts that remind me of my hurricane-filled childhood. But anything for you, my dears. For the shopping suggestions, drop to the end; first, being Sunday, cometh the sermon.

As it happens, I’m trying to slim down on just about everything: personal […]

Obama-watch in Ward 2

Saturday, February 9th, 2008

A lovely, sunny day in Washington, D.C. today and people in the Logan Circle area were out enjoying dining, shopping and having a promenade. Interestingly, but not surprisingly, Obama campaign workers were out leafleting, holding signs and reminding passers-by that our primary is Tuesday. In the neighborhood walk that followed, I saw several (apartment-)house signs, […]

All this talk of IDs . . . .

Friday, February 8th, 2008

Several people have resumed discussion of General Assembly: of this, I have nothing to add.

But it leads me to a bit of good news. I am back to the weight shown on my driver’s license, long a fiction. More than 20 pounds down from where I was when I started to loose weight at […]

Tiny church administration: getting people to sign up

Thursday, February 7th, 2008

At the risk of overselling Google Documents, I think I have a tool to promote that would be very helpful for people in churches large and small. Thanks to a Day Job Office Mate, I learned that Google Docs spreadsheets can now be shared as a form.

Previously, it was possible to share a spreadsheet […]

Tiny church administration: the communications plan

Wednesday, February 6th, 2008

I’ve gotten some kind feedback about this emerging series, and not even from someone in a tiny church! That feedback leads me to the next two or three installments, continuing the theme of communications.

The question was about having a good email newsletter. But that assumes a communications plan. Does your church have a strong culture […]

Happy Mardi Gras

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

D.C., Maryland and Virginia — and other states — will be voting in presidential primaries next week, so I shall wish you a happy Mardi Gras instead. (A Trader Joe’s fiber muffin is no substitute for king cake.) I lived several of my childhood years in suburban New Orleans so well recall the day, […]

Tiny church administration: The quick web site

Monday, February 4th, 2008

I’ll try to make the case later that people administering and organizing churches should have a Google account. There are many well-known, well-tested tools. More about that later.

But if you need a quick, simple and attractive web site, you might try a little known tool: pages.google.com. Some have used the Google Blogger tool — itself […]

Tiny church administration: No newsletter, no web site

Sunday, February 3rd, 2008

How did the church newsletter become an essential feature of church communications? If you look to nineteenth century Universalist newspapers, you know they handed many functions of the church newsletter, including inspiring thoughts, service notices, denominational affairs and family crises.

There’s a story about the proliferation of local church newsletters, I’m sure, but I suspect […]

Old church, new life

Saturday, February 2nd, 2008

The Web site for Indianapolis Star reports today about a flagship former Methodist Church’s conversion to secular use.

But see about a half way down to read how the old 1911 All Souls Unitarian Church building — which the church left for new (and current) digs in 1959 — became “a combination of residences and studios.”

The […]
