NYT article on Jewish worship groups

Friday, November 30th, 2007

The more I read about what younger Jews are doing to revitalize worship and community, the more I want something similar for Christians. I often see themes of lay-centered, multi-participant and tradition transcending worship in groups (which have adopted the older and more general name minyanim; somehow the usual translation “prayer quora” doesn’t cut it) […]

The Hollywood version of the Bible

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

I know this is going around, but this kind of list is useful for the pinched-faced zealots (pro-Bible or anti-) who need a reminder that the Bible is a mixed bag and more interesting than usually described.

Ubuntu renewed

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

I play hard and rough with my home computer, so about twice a year I need to reinstall my documents and software. I did this last week and decided to keep my system a bit leaner than usual.

Massachusetts is for plovers

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

I know plovers doesn’t rhyme with lovers, but this hopeful story (with a cute photo) from today’s New York Times makes me even happier with Massachusetts than Virginia (the “is for lovers” state) that makes life very hard indeed for same-sex couples. No, I’ve not forgotten.

And given my choice of where I can live, work, […]

Male headship and Linux (but not together)

Tuesday, November 27th, 2007

Pastors: if you need some background about and against “complementarianism” — male headship and female submission — for providing pastoral care or want to learn more about using Linux, check out one of my favorite blogs, 42, written by Methodist minister Dave Warnock.

Why the license? The movie

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

Or you can watch this three minute video. (The license in the video is an older version of the one I use. I forgot to mention that there are other options.) Oh, and yes this ethos is going to be part of the new church start.

Why the license? or, Scott Wells for the twenty-second century

Saturday, November 24th, 2007

A few minutes ago, my friend and colleague Victoria Weinstein, writing as PeaceBang, asked:

Maybe it’s my toddler-addled brain, but I’m confused. Excuse my ignorance, but I bet I’m not the only dummy out there on this. My main question is, “How does this change anything?” Because wouldn’t any ethical person attribute you appropriately even without […]

Boy in the Bands, now under a liberal license

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

After ages of thinking and talking about it, I licensed the content of this blog under one of the Creative Commons liberal licenses: the Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 3.0 United States license. The Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike license seems to be the best and most popular for bloggers to use a Creative Common license. (Roll call!)

International meeting to use Skype

Friday, November 23rd, 2007

Jaume de Marcos at his new blog UU Without Borders notes the UUA International Office is hosting a “Skypecast” — a multi-user audio chat using the Skype voice telegraphy software. I’ve never gotten much out of Skype personally, but if the bandwidth holds among the various participants, this might be a useful communication mode.

I continue […]
