Laptop saga: reader, I bought it

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

After much brow-knitting and consternation, I bought a laptop. I’m ready to blog from GA 2008.

I decided to go with a used, but not obsolete machine: a Dell Latitude D600. $350 with mouse and case, which is in line with what comparable machines were selling on eBay. Thank you, Craigslist.

Used, rather than a new, more […]

GA 2007: Friday morning

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

Well, between the postings by bloggers and a couple of emails I’ve gotten, it seems the sermon from the Service of the Living Tradition wasn’t universally loved. That’s an understatement.

Now, I have to see that video.

I’m glad that bloggers, despite their certain exhaustion, are writing. Joseph Santos-Lyons (Radical Hapa), in particular, gives some fresh background.

The […]

GA 2007: Open Space delegate voting

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

The fact that delegates make the final choice of priorities in Plenary VIII speaks to one of my concerns about democratic process.

Delegates have five votes, which may distributed or used en bloc.  Does anyone know what voting model will be used to sift the decisions? Approval? Instant run-off? Condorcet? Something else?

GA 2007: Thursday morning

Thursday, June 21st, 2007

OK, I’ll confess that part of me wants to be in Portland. You want to be where things are happening, even if you’re not keen on how they progress or what the goals are. Despite what people say about change being at the margins, you have to come to market to get a hearing. St. […]

Where James Relly is buried

Wednesday, June 20th, 2007

James Relly might fairly be called the first Universalist of the modern era. A disciple of Whitfield and contemporary of the Wesleys, Relly left a now little-read corpus of work, including his provocative Union, where he identifies Jesus Christ as the captain of humanity to whom our sins are justly imputed. American readers of Union, […]
