GA 2007: What was the big news?

Monday, June 25th, 2007

OK, one more thing. Or perhaps more if I think of something.

The UU Enforcer mentioned before General Assembly that there was going to be some big news from Bill Sinkford, UUA president, on Saturday.

What was it? That part of plenary I didn’t catch evidently.

GA 2007: last comments

Monday, June 25th, 2007

Well, since its pretty common for minister-delegates to take vacation after General Assembly, I imagine we will be getting feedback about GA for weeks. If you have questions you’d like addressed, please ask them here.

I was grateful for the streaming media. Apart for the Service of the Living Tradition, which I assume was so […]

The future for independent Unitarian Universalist organizations

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

Ron Robinson is the executive director of the Unitarian Universalist Christian Fellowship; he also writes an independent blog (Planting God Communities). While he’s careful not to speak for the UUCF, I can trust he speaks from knowledge of the independent affiliates controversy.

Check out this post, and make it all the way to the end.

I’m not […]

GA 2007: Saturday morning

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

A bit of live blogging about Plenary V. I have my laundry going, so no promises that I’ll watch all of it.

OK, something’s bad-wrong with the feeds. I can get one or two seconds of video without audio on the RealPlayer feed. Nothing on the Windows Media feed. Tom Disrud on a prepared […]

GS 2007: blogging Synod

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

UCC minister Kirk Moore (Kirogitation) is blogging regularly the events of the United Church of Christ General Synod in Hartford, Connecticut. They have an interesting program today; I would rather like to see Sen. Barack Obama, a member of a UCC church in Chicago, speak this afternoon.

Many of my readers know James Estes (Peregrinato); he’s […]

GA 2008: pimp my seminary

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

Psst! Theological students, over here.

If I wanted to improve the profile of my seminary — particularly if I’ve heard that it has a soft reputation, a problem with enrollment or that my denomination is about to slice its funding –  I might want to follow the example of the students of the United Church of […]

If I was Jewish, looking for a congregation

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

I’m in the middle of a chavurah (Hebrew חבורה, also spelled havurah, plural havurot) research kick. These small Jewish groups — often translated as “fellowships”; the root word means “friend” — have been an incredible force for transforming Jewish community life by increasing participation, changing expectation of community life and often times introducing egalitarian and […]

Can the UUA “recognize ordinations”?

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

Obijuan (Returning . . . .) wrote about the Service of the Living Tradition and then threw this out

What an absolutely boneheaded thing to say in that context as: (1) Many of us already are ordained, and (2) [WARNING: POLITY GEEKING AHEAD] congregational polity means the UUA doesn’t recognize ordinations. Period. That is the job […]

GA 2007: Board of Trustees meeting

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

I know the Board of Trustees met on June 19, but I’ve not heard anything about what was resolved at that meeting. Was the issue of the remaining Independent Affiliates addressed?

If so, who survived? If not, will it be handled at the June 26 session?

GA 2007: Friday evening

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

Some Plenary live-blogging. Goodness, I’ve seen more plenary this GA than I have at some of the one’s I’ve actually attended.

Candidate speeches. Are any of these races contested? Very bothersome. But at least the lay candidates don’t have that insufferable sing-songy cadence that seems to be installed, with a few exceptions, at ministerial ordination.

Not fond […]
