Where is Meadville Lombard going?

Friday, May 25th, 2007

25 May. I’ve been getting a lot of traffic for this post and don’t want it to “fall below the fold” so I’m giving it a bump back to the top. Welcome to my new Chicago readers.

Like other–perhaps all–Unitarian Universalist ministers, I got an email from the Rev. Lee Barker, the president of Meadville Lombard […]

Fresh Drupal install

Friday, May 25th, 2007

I have a fresh installation of the Drupal content management system at UnitarianUniversalist.org, one the domains I own and don’t do anything with. (I use an older version of Drupal for UniversalistChurch.net.)

Dan Harper and krewe have been considering Drupal as a potential way to build a church web site. Here’s an article about making a church […]

They’re here, as of May 24.

I’m seriously thinking about getting one.

Let me complain about the tourists

Friday, May 25th, 2007

If you’re riding the Washington Metro subway, stand on the right side of the escalator and walk on the right left. Yes, we know you don’t have subways from wherever you’re from, but surely common sense and good manners aren’t dead in the Outer Provinces. When your herd stands two abreast on the escalators, you […]

The tiny apartment

Friday, May 25th, 2007

I have a deep interest in very small living spaces, as I’ve written here and here.

When Hubby and I were in New York last weekend, we stayed in a 1900-era Chelsea SRO; most of the people in the building were long-term residents. I estimated the space was about 150 square feet with a kitchenette […]

No excuse for bad PDFs

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

I’m not alone in giving Meadville Lombard the hairy eyeball for its vague and shabby prospectus. Don’t let this happen to you.

I’ll not now go into the essentials of copy editing or plain English (I have some del.icio.us links for the plain English resources.) Instead, let’s consider the PDF itself.

The Portable Document Format […]

The greenest General Assembly

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

The greenest General Assembly is the one you don’t attend. Follow me here.

The reason I don’t go to General Assembly isn’t that I’m “mad at the UUA” (I’m not; just irritated on occasion) or that it is too expensive (though it is expensive) but because I don’t have any business there. If I had business […]

Positioning images in Blogger

Thursday, May 24th, 2007

I got an email asking for image positioning help in Blogger. As my readers know, I prefer WordPress to Blogger, but I know Blogger does what most people need and is also a great introduction to the medium. So some help is in order.

Free images for web designing

See this Heal Your Church Website entry for free (free of charge and freely licensed; I prefer both) images for your website and other uses.

And twenty years on

Wednesday, May 23rd, 2007

I got word that my high school graduating class has its own website.

Understand, I left that school in 1987 and don’t intend to return for this or any reunion. (Judging by the “lost” list, I’m not alone.) Even so, I was sad to see that eleven of my class of 516 had already died.
