Universalist churches exposed!

Saturday, February 17th, 2007

The UU Enforcer, whom I’ve known for years and has among his charming personality traits the photographing of Unversalist churches, put up some more images at his blog. You won’t find these in the UUA Directory, as these now serve the community without a national fellowship. Or our national fellowship.

Could GA be affordable this year?

Friday, February 16th, 2007

FUUSE points readers to the 2007 Unitarian Universalist Association General Assembly housing page. For the first time in who knows how long (but I have missed a few GAs since my first in 1993) there isn’t a big towering theme hotel next to the convention center, but several low-slung — and lower-priced — venues available.  […]

Congregationalist gone bad (and a bit of relief)

Thursday, February 15th, 2007

Have we all heard the news about the minister of First Congregational Church, Ripon, California? The one who forged deeds and sold off the church building and parsonage?

I’d hate to have been the title insurer and a law-suit-fest seems to be in the cards.

Of course, my readers want to know which unhappy fellowship will meet […]

“Vicar of Dibley” finale

Tuesday, February 13th, 2007

PeaceBang has been writing about dieting and the depictions of women, fat and thin, in the media and has drawn quite a few comments.  (As an increasingly chunkifying man, I will be writing about my own thoughts about dieting later.)

About the same time, I learned that the much-loved Vicar of Dibley series, which started when […]

Local eating, and the spiritual connection

Monday, February 12th, 2007

Dan Harper and Will Shetterly have been writing about local food, food security and the connection between fossil fuel and modern agriculture. This is something I care about, too.

In the last year, I have been buying and eating more food — apples, winter squash, cabbage, potatoes, tomatoes, cheese, herbs, salad greens, honey, yoghurt, apple butter […]

Unitarian blogger makes BBC

Saturday, February 10th, 2007

Stephen Lingwood, who writes at Reignite, is featured with the other Unitarians of Newcastle-under-Lyme in a both words and video at the BBC’s Stoke and Staffordshire site. (Which, of course, now makes it easier to apply his voice when I read his blog.)

Good going.

Gift to the future says something about today

Saturday, February 10th, 2007

The gold-plated record we sent into space in 1977 said more about the the people who sent it than any realistic hope that it would be found and interpreted.

Now we have coming a seed vault on Spitsbergen, in the Norwegian Svalbard archipelago, to preserve the world’s agricultural genetic heritage, a.k.a. the “doomsday seed bank.” What […]

Old School Post-Christian worship

Friday, February 9th, 2007

When I was compiling the list of Universalist imprints you can download from Google, I came across an antique liturgical work that might appeal to those gathering up post-Christian resources, as Dan Harper has done.

While many today would find its style stilted and the project biased towards the Biblical religions — Christianity and Judaism can […]

Ubuntu Linux may be easier to use

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

Leadership from the well-received and highly-usable (but lacking proprietary coding files) Ubuntu Linux and the more commercially minded (but less-well-received) Linspire/Freespire announced a partnership today that will give the two versions’ users the best of the other.

Some Ubuntu users might feel philosophically tainted, but I think this will open up Linux to a more general, […]

Does your church newsletter need a new voice?

Wednesday, February 7th, 2007

The basic differences between good church publications and inferior ones are good design and a consistent editorial voice. Adopting a congregational style guide is an achievable way for churches to improve the way they present themselves to others, and unlike other improvement efforts doesn’t demand a cash outlay. A common, public standard might soften hurt […]
