I spent Monday, after Revival, in the Lower East Side and Chinatown. I noted Jewish merchants with and without earlocks, and wondered what the difference in their faith customs were. I followed one of the later into a bakery on Hester and had the best hamantashen I’ve had in years. I heard (then saw) a […]
Paper has hardly been better used than by the gems of Quaker spiritual wisdom known as “Pendle Hill pamphlets” but have the form of extended tracts. (Universalist and Unitarians once used this genre extensively, now almost completely lost.) Now, that famous Philadelphia-area retreat center has some of their classic pamphlets available for download. A great […]
A quick note from New York. Revival turnout was smaller than I expected — more about that when I get home — but the keynoter I heard — the Rev. Dr. Gary Dorrien, of Union Theological Seminary has made up my reading list for the next year.

Philocrites wrote about a now-tabled resolution in the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts that would have asked clergy not to solemnize marriage, but only to go so far bless civil marriage. I’ll also be bringing discs with the Ubuntu Linux operating system (the stable, long-supported 6.06 release, which is […]
Ordinarily one files the happenings of one’s old pastorate under “let sleeping dogs lie” but there was two items of note (after a quick scan) in the November newsletter from Universalist National Memorial Church that I thought I’d point out.
First and of more general interest, the PDF download version — perhaps the print version, too […]
Mock-euphemizing evangelism as “the E word” is a bit twee and a bit 1990s, but the point is well understood: the UCC has an evangelism toolkit to download offered with a wink. The UCC, like the UUA, has a cultural problem with evangelism and without sensitivity to that feeling it will never be overcome. I […]
