New Ubuntu release coming; listen to BBC podcast

Tuesday, October 24th, 2006

I just can’t wait for the Ubuntu 6.10 “Edgy Eft” due to be released on October 26. Some people wanting long-term support will want to stick with the current 6.06, but others should look here for release notes. It will include among other things Firefox 2.0, which will be released generally today. See GetFirefox.com in […]

Ought a theological center be the goal?

Monday, October 23rd, 2006

Of all the angst-ridden group processes Unitarian Universalists have endured in recent years, none has promised so much and produced so little as the quest to find a “theological center.”

I think that quest asked too much. I was much heartened to read what the Rev. John H. Thomas, the General Minister and President of the […]

Rudolf Koch for typefaces in UCC publications

Monday, October 23rd, 2006

One of the reasons I love typography is that it is one of the sources of art and design that nearly everyone sees and at some level appreciates. I was looking at the work of German calligrapher and typefounder Rudolf Koch (1876-1934) and recognized the hand (or at least the influence) behind the the […]

Awkward reportage at UUA.org

Friday, October 20th, 2006

The lede story at UUA.org is newsworthy: “Connecticut Interfaith Clergy Bear Witness Against Legislators Supporting Military Commissions Act.”

I’m glad to see it there. I think the Military Commissions Act is a unconstitutional violation of habeas corpus. Moral people should oppose it. So should constitutionalists.

Unitarian Universalists should be proud when others of their own speak up […]

New-to-you laptop: best for churches or non-profits, part 3

Friday, October 20th, 2006

Michelle Murrain, in the last installment of “New-to-you laptop” asks

Now, of course, there is the next question: how do we get people comfortable with using Linux?

This seems to be ground others have covered, at least in part. One approach would be to introduce open-source software already ported to Microsoft, specifically the Firefox browser and OpenOffice.org. […]

Church administration certification available

Thursday, October 19th, 2006

Good news from the Association of Unitarian Universalist Administrators, via the Fall 2006 The Religious Leader. The AUUA “now offers continuing education” after a “year-long pilot program was successfully completed.”

I have no knowledge of the content or rigor of the credentials, but I can’t help that it — in concept anyway — would be a […]

New-to-you laptop: best for churches or non-profits, part 1

Wednesday, October 18th, 2006

I sent the following note to technology and religion blogger Michelle Murrain two days ago, and post it here with her permission.

Michelle –

I have an idea for tag-team blogging if you’re game. I can’t think of anyone else I know who’s qualified (because I’m not, except as a guinea pig.)

What, not so hypothetically, would be […]

Unitarians on The Colbert Report

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

Did anyone else catch the Unitarian quip on The Colbert Report tonight, in “The Word” segment?  If not, I’m sure it will be YouTubed and (of course) replayed tomorrow on Comedy Central.

EPA page for burial at sea

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

Not everyone will need this. Perhaps quite few. But if you’re conducting a burial at sea — whether the remains are cremated or not — this a resource you should have.

Happy birthday 300,000,000th American

Tuesday, October 17th, 2006

Right about now, according to the US Census, the three hundred millionth American is being born. I suppose that’s some kind of milestone in this, the third most-populous country in the United States world. It is not quite double the population in 1950. I suppose we have to think about Baby 300 and his or […]
