The Hymnal Code

Tuesday, June 20th, 2006

Richard Hurst today asked me some technical questions about (”the red hymnal”) Hymns of the Spirit — its nice to have a speciality, if an arcane one — and I thought I’d unpack little-known tid-bits with you. In particular, I wanted to share an old semi-secret about how that hymnal was put together.

Church denomination convention watch: Presbyterian Church (USA)

Monday, June 19th, 2006

Well, with the Episcopalians having so much “fun” in Ohio, I thought I’d turn to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church (USA), who “do it decently and in order” as the sexually suggestive t-shirts of yore described.

Crossing the Cuyahoga

Monday, June 19th, 2006

There’s a saying among some Protestants that when one of their own becomes a Roman Catholic he or she “has crossed the Tiber.” Orestes Brownson, at different times a Unitarian and Universalist minister, but most famous as a Roman Catholic lay writer is an example.

What about Unitarian Universalists “going over” to the United Church of […]

How tall should a temporary communion table be?

Sunday, June 18th, 2006

There are times you need a temporary communion table, like when you’re officiating at General Assembly (Note: UUCF-sponsored communion, Friday 11am and Saturday 8:30am; America’s Center room 274) or if you’re starting a schismatic Anglican-ish church. But if you have the luxury of adjustibility, how tall should it be? More after the jump.

Keeping up with UUA General Assembly blog posts

Saturday, June 17th, 2006

Philocrites laments there’s no easy way to keep up with blog posts relating to the forthcoming UUA GA. While I haven’t figured out a technically astute way (yet) to make a feed of these blog posts, a little extra Boolean logic and Technorati can help. Note the UUAGA06 and UUGA06 tag references, which I suspect […]

A few Episcopalian General Convention resolutions of note

Friday, June 16th, 2006

It isn’t all about the Windsor Report.

A few things I’m noting or watching, after the jump.

Open data standards for the Episcopalians

Friday, June 16th, 2006

Hardly the biggest matter the Episcopalian’s General Convention has to resolve, but it is still heartening to see that the House of Delegates passed a resolution that would move the Episcopal Church towards open data standards. (Wikipedia article link.) That is, to use their own descriptor a way to “future proof” data by using known […]

Church denomination convention watch: The Episcopal Church (formerly ECUSA)

Thursday, June 15th, 2006

I know I wish there was more substantive business at the UUA General Assembly, but looking to the General Convention of the Episcopal Church — well, I’m glad we don’t have that much business.

I won’t comment much because the list of people blogging on the General Convention is longer than your arm. Will the Piskys […]

The parson wears black outdoors

Tuesday, June 13th, 2006

I was reading PeaceBang’s encomium on the trench coat (”Why You Need a Trench“) and she invoked my name. (I’ll confess I thought of World War One when I first saw the title)

There are special fancy capes that clergy can wear, but although Boy in the Bands will disagree with me, I tend to think […]

Perhaps we can claim him in the pamphlets

Tuesday, June 13th, 2006

Yes, the Unitarian Universalists get confused for the grand-daddy of all mail-order churches, the Universal Life Church, formerly of Modesto, California. (I had my dog ordained.)

I have Bravo on, Queer Eye specifically. (I was channel surfing, saw a promo for a related web-only gay channel and didn’t cut away. Normally, I watch Queer Eye with […]
