Two delightful typefaces for your church newsletter

When it comes to techy stuff, I have the attention span of a hummingbird.
After begging off the advanced typesetting TeX, LaTeX, etc. software systems in January, a comment by Dan Harper has me trying to learn it all over again. This time I’m actually reading the tutorials and doing the exercises rather than doing [...]

When the best is good enough

With PeaceBang going full bore with how ministers should dress and groom, I thought I’d join in. You know I love it.
So what does the debate about pre-Reformation English liturgical styles have to do with a Unitarian Universalist (or other) minister of thin to midling means?
When certain members of the Church of England in the [...]

Who would be a Christian after a week like this?

Well, my faith is stronger when other Christians are strong in their faith.
This week has had two important Christian news stories: the rescue (thank God) of the three remaining Christian Peacekeeper Team members, and the apostasy trial and threatened death sentence of Afghan Christian convert Abdul Rahman. Interesting that certain Afghan officials are trying to [...]

Blogger dinner

My thanks to ChaliceChick and the CSO, who organized a little blogger dinner and whose guest I was. A Church Friend of Chalice Chick and Tamara of Leaves from the Notebook of an Untamed Cynic, with whom I have too many things in common, were also there. Thanks to all for a lovely evening.

A pause to remember

I would normally not talk about family matters, but my paternal grandmother died today. It seems more unseemly to ignore the day. Please spare a prayer for Mary if you do that sort of thing.
We though we had more time with her than we did, but I am so proud of her self-determined decision making [...]

Paper planners: what format do you UUs use?

One of my medium-term projects is preparing PDF and other templates of ready-to-use forms and resources for church administration and worship. (An extension of the “get your service book pieced together” exercise that all new ministers seem to do.)
Let me know what planner format size you use in the comments.

Good websites can be very simple

The most important tool for designing a good church website is pencil and paper. Draw out what you think will work before you go to the screen, and ask someone else if the design makes sense. Make them try it out. Change or remove what doesn’t work. In my experience, remove first, and change only [...]

Welcome UU ministers

I know there’s a little (perhaps very little) buzz about blogs among some UU ministers. Welcome here. Most of what I do related to Universalist and generally Christian faith and practice, church administration, solutions to tech problems, and UUA matters.

Revival in New York

The more I think about it, the more excited I am about the Unitarian Universalist Christian Fellowship Revival assembly this November 2 to 5 in New York. It will be held at Fourth Universalist (4U) in the Upper West Side, which also makes me happy. The last time I saw PeaceBang in real life, she [...]

There is a balm in Singapore

Sometimes Hubby’s back needs ointment. He likes Tiger Balm.
I noticed the jar’s size and shape would be perfect, when empty, for storing palm ash for Ash Wednesday. (If you ignore or cover the great cat embossed on the lid and bottom.)
