Looking at UUA.org

Thursday, May 19th, 2005

After identifying what I think are the best tiny church and best general church website (and hinting broadly at the worst site) in the Unitarian Universalist Association, I’m now setting my sights on UUA.org. While it is better than the Episcopalian’s unnavigable Flash-fiesta (you’ve been warned) it is still getting a bit — um — […]

The UUA poll

Thursday, May 19th, 2005

Oh dear, another UUA poll. Another frickin’ unscientific, self-selecting poll that nevertheless will be used to justify a course of action.

PeaceBang brought it up, but by coincidence I ran across it when plumbing for new resources at the Unitarian Universalist Ministers Association website (to again try to justify membership; I really am trying.)

I was actively […]

Unfellowshipped ministers mistreated?

Wednesday, May 18th, 2005

James asked the question at Unity, and bid me reply. Sure.

He writes:

I have been led to believe that although the UUA affirms congregational polity, and thus the right of a congregation to ordain whom it chooses, that the professional association — or at least professinals within the UUA — look askance at such ordinations, that […]

Reviewing a writer’s rights

Wednesday, May 18th, 2005

Derek commented, in reference to his Galatians project, “So open source it will be… even if it is KJV.”

I’m not sure if he meant that he’d have to use the King James Version because it is in the public domain, or if he intends to release his work into the public domain (probably the former) […]

Is the mainline church closed-source?

Tuesday, May 17th, 2005

I like open source software. It is usually financially free, and while I don’t develop software, I do benefit from those who use the freedom is provides. When InfoCentral, a church and not-for-profit management software project decided to follow a Java development line, some other people forked its development (under the name ChurchInfo using a […]

Self-indulgent MP3 posting

Tuesday, May 17th, 2005

Dear friend Pepa Katharine asked what my Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown list is. Since I only discovered it by reading between the lines of my own MP3 player, and removing the service music, podcasts and generally goofy stuff (like theme music from various Gerry Anderson TV series) I can’t promise there’s […]

Which Episcopalian wedding rite inspired us?

Tuesday, May 17th, 2005

As I mentioned before, I’ve noticed how low-church minister’s manuals tend to include the Episcopal prayer book wedding rite along side some other minimal service. I also can’t help but notice that Universalist and Unitarian wedding rites — even the humanist ones — take cues and sometimes whole passages from an Episcopalian rite. But […]

Welcome to the seminarian blogosphere . . .

Monday, May 16th, 2005

to Michelle Murrain.

Her two blogs:

Pearlbear (personal blog)
Michelle’s Ministry Blog (obviously . . . . )

She’s no stranger to the blogosphere, but is going to Pacific School of Religion, thus the new appellation.

She posted a comment to my UU LUG post, and noted her lead authorship of a […]

First call in the UU blogosphere?

Sunday, May 15th, 2005

Dan Harper shares some good news at his blog, and has probably made a first: the first blogging Unitarian Universalist minister to announce a call. (If not, do correct me in the comments.)

In his case, as the minister of the First Unitarian Church, New Bedford, Massachusetts. A blessing upon him and his new pastorate.

His […]

Pastor’s little helper?

Sunday, May 15th, 2005

PeaceBang is not unreasonably sour about iPods (”Mother’s Little Helper“) after reading an unthink-piece by and about plugged-in soccer moms in Newsweek. PB paints the iPod as audio Valium, and perhaps that’s fitting in their case.

My experience is that is more like audio cannabis, if the 60s hype of “enhancing experience” is even half true. […]
