Prayer book blues (or, help using the space), part two

Wednesday, March 17th, 2004

Now that you’ve outlined your service’s rubrics, we’ll resume.

You’ll notice that, provided you use a denominational or traditional service, you’re going to get about the same thing. In English-speaking Protestant churches, many of the usages flow through, or are influenced by, Cramner’s reforms in the Church of England. He in turn was drawing from a […]

Prayer book blues (or, help decoding the text), part one

Wednesday, March 17th, 2004

There are Universalist prayer books, and there are Unitarian prayer books, and rumor has it the Episcopalians have one.

One of the big problems with a prayerbook tradition, especially one that is in the margins, is that there is a learning gap between reading the printed text and having directions for the order of worship. This […]

Sad News

Tuesday, March 16th, 2004

Some sad news in the family yesterday. If you know me personally, you might know some of the details, but it really isn’t for public consumption. Still, I don’t want to pass over it without some remark for those who have agreed to pray.

My grateful thanks will go to intercessors, known or unknown, who (continue […]

Color, absence

Tuesday, March 16th, 2004

Like many Unitarian Universalist ministers over the last week, I was “oh, not really doing much, thanks” but in fact writing a sermon for the second annual Borden Sermon contest. Most of my colleagues seemed - or played - quite aloof to it, but now that the deadline has passed (yesterday) are a bit more […]

What not to do in worship

Sunday, March 14th, 2004

I went to another UCC church today, and won’t go back there. (Again, no names to spare the innocent.)

New comments at left

Sunday, March 14th, 2004

Thanks to Philocrites for the bits of MovableType code that makes the newest comments section more usable.

Now if I can get the rest of these blogs to not shift their boxes all over the place! (Thanks to Ole for the screenshots, too.)

New host seems to have worked

Friday, March 12th, 2004

Well, the name servers seems to have caught up, and so I think we’re all on the new host together. This means new features and services for this blog (and site in general) in coming weeks.

Textweek blogs on

Wednesday, March 10th, 2004

One of my favorite go-to Bible, preaching, and lectionary websites now has its own blog. I plan to read it, er, religiously.

Allelon and on

Wednesday, March 10th, 2004

I keep coming back to the Allelon website and reading with interest. Call me jaded, but I keep waiting for the other shoe to drop. Until then, I read it with interest and hope to figure out what in my gut responds to it. (I think I’ve got it intellectually.) It may be simply […]

The next three years . . .

Tuesday, March 9th, 2004

Following the same thread of advice, I will eventually plot a three year plan for my new church start. To that end, I’ve made up four annual calendars - through 2007 - in the Excel spreadsheet format. I’ve already included the dates for Ash Wednesday, Easter, Ascension, and Pentecost.

If you want copies, “continue […]
