Blog updates

Wednesday, January 28th, 2004

I’m making a few small structural changes.

At the end of each entry, I’ll soon be adding a link to the category archive: where entries of a common theme are stored. Because of the recent flood of UUA growth entries, it will get its own category; so will the United Church of Christ. I’ve renamed […]

Gay Bible 101

Wednesday, January 28th, 2004

I ordinarily hate partisan “why the Bible doesn’t hate gay people” material because it is either weak on scholarship, balance, or common sense, and these far too often tie up their conclusions with a big bow of defensiveness, or worse, ambivolence to the Bible.

But I found a resource of the “Gay Bible 101″ genre that […]

Icky news day

Wednesday, January 28th, 2004

A fun day out, for me. My Unitarian Universalist Ministers Association chapter meeing where UUA president Bill Sinkford was the guest speaker, a fiery squid-packed Korean lunch, a haircut, and the purchase of two boxes of tea. Lotsa fun.

But less fun for the UUA. Came home, crunched numbers, and with 662 congregations reporting, with a […]

What’s so good about small churches?

Wednesday, January 28th, 2004

Update: With 561 congregations reporting a combined membership of 90,803, the UUA has a net gain of 745 members.

I use an old copy of the UUA Directory: 2001-02. That was the last one before the Quebec General Assembly when we (the Americans) lamented loosing them (the Canadians) because it meant that we would never again […]

News from the easily distracted

Tuesday, January 27th, 2004

There has to be something more important I can do, but until I find it:

With 539 churches reporting, a total of 89,087 members, there is a net increase of 715 members. (That is, we’ve dropped below 1%.)

Up to the minute coverage, blah, blah.

More churches using MT

Tuesday, January 27th, 2004

Last August, in this entry, I introduced two churches that used MovableType (the software behind this blog) and then introduced the software to the website of my former church.

Thought it would be worthwhile to revisit this, and here are a few more sites to look for inspiration.

Redland Baptist Church, Rockville, Maryland, produced by the good […]

“Hero” churches

Tuesday, January 27th, 2004

If I had my way, I would dub any church that grew by (say) 20% a “hero church,” no matter its size, or if it gave its “fair share” to the UUA. One more stipulation: it would have to get certified each year. No fair “growing” by not submitting statistics each year.

That said, with 515 […]

New Hampshire returns

Tuesday, January 27th, 2004

UUA congregational certifications have been flying in.

When 494 congregations reported, with a total number of adult members equalling 81,298, there was a net increase of 833 persons. In other words, the one-percent-and-change figure is holding.

What what about New Hampshire, where so much attention is focused today?

Of the fourteen congregations that have so far reported, New […]

Joseph Priestley, food, and silicone

Tuesday, January 27th, 2004

Was cleaning out recent issues of the Washington Post and found an interesting article in the January 21 Food section that mentions everyone’s favorite Unitarian minister-cum-scientist.

Silicone in the Kitchen (Washington Post)

Getting Privilege of Call with the UCC

Monday, January 26th, 2004

As I mentioned earlier, I am working on receiving Privilege of Call within the Potomac Association of the United Church of Christ. I’m not going to giev a blow-by-blow account of this process, but if you’re interested you should see the UCC’s Manual on Ministry, available on-line.

Link: Manual on Ministry.

Section four is the one of […]
